Each dog’s anal glands should discharge during bowel movements, but if they don’t empty properly, it can lead to uncomfortable and painful impaction. If you see your dog scooting, licking, or biting themselves or developing a bad odor, constipation, straining, or pain during a bowel movement, it may be a sign of anal gland impaction.
